Hamilton City Library has crafted a mobile app that connects people with the city’s past.

The app was launched to coincide with Hamilton’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

The mobile application guides users through walking tours of some of the city’s historic locations and milestones, stimulating community interest in Hamilton’s history and the Hamilton City Libraries’ Heritage Collection.

The app comes with 2 walking tours:

– a 14-stop tour of the south end of Hamilton’s city centre starts at the Victoria Bridge, takes in The Bank , and ends at the Waikato Brewery building

– a 16-stop tour of Hamilton East starting at Soldiers Memorial Park, and ending at the former site of Thomas Slade’s carriage works on the southern corner of Grey and Bridge Streets.

Stops on the tours have audio descriptions of the locations past that users can listen to. Each tour includes a map and the stops are marked on it. Written and audio directions between stops are also provided.

Hamilton City Libraries intends to broaden the app contents as more of the city’s heritage materials is digitised.

The app, is free, and can be downloaded from the App Store or the Google Play Store.
