The secret to happiness? Visit your library!

British researchers have found that library users are happier and more satisfied than non-users. The research report done by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has found that frequent library use has the same effect on social wellbeing as a pay rise of £1359 ($2,666).

The researchers investigating the link between sport, cultural and wellbeing found that libraries were one of the most valued cultural activities for respondents. They based their findings on estimates of the value of activities we do to increase our personal happiness.

Library visits were one of the most valued cultural activities – a visit to the library was the second most valuable activity – beaten only by dancing! While educational and financial achievements are one of the many things that libraries can encourage, the report suggests visits to your library can boost your overall social wellbeing to.

Public libraries have always played a significant role in our communities, being the most used by choice community facility provided by local councils. The report supports the belief people have in their libraries as a key contributor to a happier and more productive community.

Public libraries have always been considered a trusted institution that offers communities a growing choice of recourses, advice, social and community spaces and room for self expression.
